The History of curriculum in US system

There are three era in the development of curriculum in US context. They are Evolution era, Modern era, Post Modern era. The characteristic of Evolution era:
  • *Begun 27 years after the first English-speaking pilgrims at Plymouth Rock and when US held a regulatory act to govern their first “grammar” school in 1635.
  • *The purpose of education is to educate a “literate citizen” in order they can participate in acts of governance.
  • *in 1812 Students get lesson about nationality and merged it with beliefs.
  • *Schools were of minimal duration (several years at most), were taught in a one-room schoolhouse erected by the community, and focused on basic literacy skills.
  • *In 1796–1859, schooling that was universal, free, and nonsectarian.
  • *In 1636. The higher education system, unlike the public elementary system, was private and exclusive, and was focused solely on producing learned men and leaders for the emerging nation.
  • *During the 1890s:
  • Free to Attend Tax-Supported Through Secondary Level Separation of Church and State Purposes: Literacy, Knowledge Acquisition, Citizenship A State’s Right The characteristic of Modern era:
    • *Begun from 18th until early 21st century.
    • *The background of changing curriculum is the awareness of humanistic thought, emerging awareness of human development and the beginning of behavioral process.
    • *Learning by doing approach was introduced.
    • *Environment influenced learning Charles Darwin (1809-1882).
    • *Evident : 1918. The first curriculum was written and published. It was emerging as specially of professional education.
    • *There is no discrimination especially ras in public school.
    • *The education focus: health, command of fundamental process, home membership,vocation, citizenship,use of leisure time, ethical character.
    • *Complete the evolution era
    • The characteristic of Post Modern era:
      • *Begun from 1960-1970's (civil rights)
      • *School were the learning place
      • *Pluralism and multiculturalism
      • *Alternative schools were invented and legislated
      • *There was "Real School" movement
      • *Computerize replace knowledgeable teacher
      • *Richness and variety of internet appeared
      • *Drill master becomes mastery instruction.

The Comparation of 2 models of class in Indonesia

Based on the picture there are two condition of classroom : Picture A
  • *Teacher center (sitting arrangement and number of students).
  • *Kinesthetic students - not provided
  • *Pair discussion - difficult to have discussion
  • *Too much students
  • *It has applied curricullum 1994 because it used teacher center learning
  • *Picture A applied Curriculum 1994 because it used for big class.
  • *Picture A shows Cognitive oriented because there is no students’ interaction because there are many students.
  • Picture B
  • *Students center - grouping
  • *Easy to move or activity
  • *Group discussion
  • *Ideal number of students
  • *Post modern era
  • *It has applied Curriculum1975because in Curriculum 1975 apply learning system CBSA it also apply in curriculum 1984.
  • *It has implemented curriculum 2004 (KBK) because in KBK there is scaffolding as one of method in the learning process, those method can be seen in the second picture where there are group as the scaffolding.
  • *It has applied curriculum KTSP 2006 because method that is used in that curriculum is class discussion and group discussion.
  • And in Indonesian context *Many students *Sitting arrangement-teacher center *There is a space for grouping *Pair work and group work
